Before Use
Thank you for your continued patronage of Isizue Sozaemon.
All of ISISO's Japanese ceramic earthenware are produced using authentic traditional techniques.
Consequently, although the clay body is fired at high temperatures and glazed, if used as is, moisture will penetrate the material and cause leakage.
However, in the case of tea utensils, the user is encouraged to enjoy the gradual aging process where the item seals itself through daily use. Furthermore, for flower vases in particular, the slight water leakage is sometimes appreciated as part of the aesthetic appeal. For these reasons, we intentionally do not apply modern chemical water-sealing or pore-closing treatments.
Please note that for any item—be it tableware, soup bowls, tea utensils, or flower vases—we accept orders for an additional sealing process using the traditional method that creates an antique-like patina, or a treatment with a modern waterproofing agent, either at the time of purchase or at a later date.
If you wish to seal the item yourself and enjoy that process of change, please refer to the instruction manual titled "How to Seal Ceramic Earthenware (Medome)," which is included with your vessel.
